I’ve never been able to find anything that does exactly the core thing I wanted here (save almost any link with audio and everything just happens automatically and you can listen to it in whatever podcast player you want), so I built PodQueue

Before PodQueue, I found myself continually frustrated with the experience of trying to usefully bookmark a single episode of a podcast or something a friend recommended I listen to. I'd either have to hunt it down in my podcast player's podcast directory, or forget it forever.

There's services like Instapaper/Pocket for articles, and Pinboard for regular bookmarking—@PodQueue extends that concept and makes it easy to save audio on the web to listen to later.

I built PodQueue slowly in my spare time on nights & weekends, so it's been a long time getting ready (git shows my 1st commit as being on February 2nd 2019!), and in that time I tried to really hone it down at being truly excellent at that core function

I also wanted PodQueue to be fast, accessible, and respectful of users' privacy:

There's a lot of under-the-hood work that goes into "fast", but I'm pretty happy with where it's at. One example: whenever a playlist is updated, PodQueue automatically generates a static version of its podcast RSS feed, so that it can be served instantly via CDN when requested.

All this to say: please check out PodQueue, and feel free to give me any feedback on it!

It's 100% free to try for 30 days, with no obligation.

PodQueue is a paid subscription service, and the fee is currently just $5/month.

That seemed the best way to make PodQueue a sustainable service while respecting users' privacy, since the other way services like this stay free is with targeted advertising and selling user data.

I also wanted to be respectful of podcast creators’ content—as a result, PodQueue does not host any audio, and listens via PodQueue will still be recorded normally in most server-side statistics podcasters use: https://podqueue.fm/pages/help/podcasters

If anything, I want PodQueue to help drive new subscriptions to podcasts by giving listeners an easy way to try out episodes that interest them

Part of the magic in PodQueue is the audio extractor I wrote—for the better part of 2 years almost any time I saw a link with audio I would save it in the beta version of PodQueue and make sure the correct audio link was extracted. It’s something I’ve never seen anywhere else.

There’s plenty of features I’d like to eventually add to PodQueue, but there’s also features I’m proud not to add.

No algorithmic suggestions (there’s some hand-picked ones to start you out).

No social networking (there are enough social networks).

Building @PodQueue was also a good chance for me to get hands-on experience with some of the newer web dev landscape. The main app is Rails 6 running on Heroku, with some assistance from AWS Lambda/SES/S3/CloudFront
